New Lathe

I set up the new lathe this weekend, but could not do any turning yet....I need some adapters to make all the connections fit right, before I can turn anything.  I'm really impatient to start using it, but must wait for the right parts, for safety.  I will be able to turn larger projects, and have a better handle on the type turning I can do.  I will be able to finish 4 bowls I have roughed out, when I get back to the shop next week.  Even though I did not get any wood working done, we had a great weekend in the Mountains.

I will post more products next week, and hope to get a couple of bowls to show on this post.

Thanks for looking, and let me know your thoughts and ideas on turning.

New Artisans Work

I am going to start showing new artisans work on my web site. You can find their work at www.jaybees-crafts.com, under the Local Artisans section. These works are coming from the local art guild. If you like it, feel free to purchase at a reduced price for Christmas.

I hope that they do go on the site, as I feel that there are a lot of artisans that do not have an outlet for their work. With so many very talented artisans out there, their work needs to be shown. Please take a look, as I should have some work on the site by the end of the week. Let me know your comments on their work, and your suggestions for new projects.

Rhodium Precious Metal Pen

This custom hand-turned pen is plated with Rhodium, a member of the Platinum Group of precious metals. The wood is Cocobolo, which is a tropical wood that is very hard and has a hand rubbed lacquer finish, which makes it durable and long lasting. The pen will get darker with use from the natural oils from the skin that will make it more beautiful with time. This pen can be refilled by using a Cross refill that can be purchased at most office supply stores for as little as $3.95 for a two pack.

The fine hand crafted pen will make a great gift or impress your colleagues. It comes in a pen boat for easy wrapping and protection and can be purchased from my web-site jaybees-crafts.com. If you have any questions, please let us know.

I have started several bowls this past weekend. I have started another maple brandy snifter shaped bowl and hope it turns out. I am going to let them dry more than the others in the past..... I will keep you updated on the progress......

Let me know your thoughts and any new techniques on turning you would like to share.

New Sanding technique

I just did my first bowl using a new technique for me….. I used an orbital sander and had the lathe on a lower speed. This caused the sand paper to do it’s job and not leave any sanding marks. The bowl was make out of a piece of pecan that I got from a large limb that fell in town. It only has wax polish on it and I think it came out marvelous.

I will continue to update on new projects when I get them finished. I hope when I go up the the cabin this weekend, I can get a cherry bowl finished that has been drying for about 1 1/2 months. A friend had to have a cherry tree cut down at her father’s house and I was lucky enough to get my hands on a good supply for the shop.

New Winged Bowl

This week I tried to change the winged Cherry Bowl as most people look at it. Most winged bowls are shallow and it seems to be the nature to have a very even cupped out bowl if you want to have wings. However I decided to try something different. I cut the bowl part of the winged bowl a little deeper, which gives it more of a bowl feeling, but kept the wings that gives the traditional look. The outcome was fantastic. The wings reach to the sky, and the bowl has a depth that can not be found in the traditional winged bowl. I was also able to leave some of the bark on the edges of the bowl, which gives it a rich character. Take a look and give me your thoughts and any suggestions you may have.DSC_0143

In the weeks to come, I am going to try something I saw on a clip from one of the turning sites. This will give me a vase with wings. I will upload progress photos, as I think this will take several weeks to complete.

If anyone has any different techniques, please let me know, and thanks for reading.

WoodCraft

From our wood shop located in the beautiful Western North Carolina mountain town of Brasstown, we have created a variety of hand crafted wooden products. We try to utilize local salvaged wood, from windfall trees, other woodshop projects, or recently cut wood that would normally go into a landfill.

Our crafts are on display in local gift shops and several wineries. If you are interested in handling our crafts, please email us for additional information. We have great wholesale pricing.
